The Chevron-funded skills development project “Uttoron” organized an experience sharing seminar on April 25th at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, Dhaka. Mr. Nasrul Hamid, MP, the Honorable State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources was present as Chief Guest at the seminar entitled “Skills for Better Life: Uttoron’s Experience”. Additionally, as special guests, Mr. Jalal Ahmed, Additional Secretary and Executive Project Director, Skills for Employment Investment Program (SEIP), Mr. Abul Mansur Md. Faizullah, ndc, Additional Secretary and Chairman, Petrobangla, Mr. Kevin Lyon, President, Chevron Bangladesh, Mr. Ismail H. Chowdhury, Director, Policy, Government & Public Affairs, Chevron Bangladesh and Mr. Anirban Bhowmik, Country Director, Swisscontact were in attendance.

Speaking of the project’s success, Mr. Nasrul Hamid, MP said, “Uttoron is an example of excellence where Chevron has partnered with Swisscontact to build the skilled workforce for Bangladesh in collaboration with Ministry of Finance’s Skills for Employment Investment Program (SEIP).” He encouraged more private enterprises to come forward with similar skills development endeavors through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. A book entitled “Karigor: Success Stories from Uttoron Project” was launched during the event.

Uttoron - skills for better life, a three-year skills development project, commenced its journey in August 2016 with an aim to enhance employment opportunities for 1,400 community members in Sylhet, Moulavibazar and Habiganj districts. The project is funded by Chevron under the ‘workforce development’ component of its Bangladesh Partnership Initiative (BPI), and is being implemented by Swisscontact. For the training component, Uttoron has a unique partnership with the Skills for Employment Investment Program (SEIP), funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Bangladesh, and implemented by the Ministry of Finance. As of March 2018, the project has boosted awareness of around 40,000 community members on skills training and has trained 590 youths in light engineering, construction and ready-made garments sector. To date, 361 graduates have already been placed in gainful jobs in different industries.
